HISTORY

Ocean County was established in 1850 from portions of Monmouth County. East Jersey and West Jersey were split into two tracts after land disputes forced a line to be surveyed formally between the two territories. This line became known as the Keith Province Line, which eventually divided Ocean and Burlington counties. A skirmish at Cedar Creek (now in Barnegat Township) marked last land conflict of American Revolution. New Jersey State Legislature formed a new county, called Ocean from Monmouth County. Ocean County has many beaches and boardwalks as well as a maritime and pinelands heritage and historical resources. Ocean County is the southernmost county in the New York metro area; however the southern part of the county borders the Philadelphia metro area. Its county seat is Toms River. Ocean County is home to many attractions including Island Beach State Park, Long Beach Island, Six Flags Great Adventure, home of the world's tallest, fastest roller coaster, Kingda Ka. Ocean County is also the northeast gateway to New Jersey's Pine Barrens. It is also home to Mantoloking, the wealthiest community in the state of New Jersey and Brick Township, America's safest city.
